Low Carb Diets - Pros and Cons

Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power...Sounds familiar?
Almost everyone has tried these low carb, high protein and fat diets at one point or the other in our lives. But the question is ' How effective are they? '
Do they work? Are they safe? Will they cause any side effects?

Well here are the pros and cons of the low carb diets.
Pros
1. Low carb diets result in a more rapid weight loss than the low calorie, low fat diets. Atleast for the first six months .
2. They are easier to follow. Why? - because eating a low carb, high protein and fat diet suppresses appetite and the dieter feels ' full ' for a longer period of time.
3. Low carb diets are good for the health of your heart as they effect both the good and the bad cholesterol levels in your blood.

Cons
1. Over a period of time the rapid weight loss effect of this type of diet decreases.
2. It can be difficult to stick to as it lacks in variety.
3. Constipation can be an unwanted side effect of this diet because of its low fibre and high fat content.
4. Excessive consumption of meat is known to be linked with colon and prostrate cancer.
5.Due to high intake of fat the body accumulates ketones ( by products of fats ) which can cause dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dehydration and bad breath.

Bottom line?
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources and low in saturated fats is important as irrespective of whatever weight loss goals, good health is an important goal too.
