Dandruff

Dandruff or the excessive scaling of the scalp is one of the most persuasive hair and scalp problems that a person faces. This is mostly caused by a fungus - Pytrosporum ovale which is found naturally on the scalp. It feeds on the the skin's natural oil and causes irritation and shedding of dead skin. Some people are more affected by this fungus than others. Stress is also known to aggravate dandruff in some people.

Hair truths:
Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. As hair is inert, shampoos or rinses and other nutrients enriched with proteins cannot make hair 'healthier' or affect hair growth.

Hair and your diet:
A diet rich in vitamins A, B6, C, zinc, niacin and biotin contribute towards better hair and scalp health. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains is also recommended. Taking 1 or 2 teaspoons of flaxseed oil helps improve dandruff in some people. However, you'll have to wait several weeks or months to see an effect. Dandruff has also known to be improved when people shun alcohol, heavily spiced foods and hot liquids.

Dandruff Control:
Mild dandruff can be controlled by shampooing daily until the dandruff is in control as they hasten the shedding of the dead cell layer from the scalp.
Shampoos which contain the anti fungal medication ketoconazole also help.
